I’ve been in New York for the past couple of weeks which means that we’ve been doing a lot of eating out. I think I cooked ONCE while I’ve been here – two roast chickens which were a big hit. It accompanied my DH’s signature seafood linguine. By the way, it really makes a huge difference when you have an oven that heats up very quickly. My chickens finally got that crispy golden skin. *Sigh* I miss cooking with gas.
Anyway, one delectable that really made an impression was a sandwich from DeFonte’s Sandwich Shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually visit the shop since us ladies stayed home while the men went foraging for food in 90 degree temps. After a good hour or so, they finally came back! I loved the waxy butcher paper that wrapped each hero. Apparently this place has been open since 1922. Awesome. The sandwich that is pictured is called Nicky’s Special (you’ll have to excuse the quality of the photo…it was shot with the camera in my phone). It is composed of a layer of gardiniera, “gabagool” (capicola), salumi, provolone, fried eggplant, chopped iceberg, tomatoes on a hero. Silly me asked my friends what “gabagool” was and they were all like, “Didn’t you watch Sopranos?! It’s gabagool! You know, GABAGOOL.” Because repeating it and saying it louder was going make it more clear to me. ANYWAY…Next time I’ll make a visit to the shop on a run to Fairway and try their other monstrous delectables! I hear their roast beef sandwiches are pretty amazing and I’m a sucker for meatball subs.
MANGIA!
