Thursday Three – Read it and eat

Here are three things I’m obsessed about this week.

1 – Eat Your Books

Are you a cookbook junkie? Are your books filled with yellow sticky notes bookmarking your to-do recipes? Have you ever looked through 12 issues of Cook’s Illustrated to look for “that” recipe for arroz con pollo? I have. It’s a great way to waste 15 minutes of your life. But this issue may disappear forever! I was just introduced to this service called Eat Your Books where you can essentially create an online personal library of almost all your cookbooks and magazines.  They’ve indexed thousands of cookbooks and magazines so that your online bookshelf becomes searchable making your search for that favorite recipe a breeze. No more yellow stickies!

2 – Celebrate Julia Child’s 100th Birthday with PBS

PBS food is hosting a weeklong celebration for Julia’s 100th birthday. You can participate by cooking one of Julia’s recipes between August 5th and 15th and then share your creation on PBS’ website, their Facebook page or on Twitter using the hastag #CookforJulia. As you know, I’ve participated in a couple of events hosted by #SundaySupper (a very awesome community) and they will also be hosting an event on August 5th to honor Julia Child. Follow the group on Twitter starting at 3 p.m. EST that day using the hastags #sundaysupper and #cookforjulia. I’m planning on making Blanquette de veau a l’ancienne (veal stew with onions & mushrooms) with a side of concombres au buerre (baked cucumbers) and boiled potatoes. Can’t wait!

3 – Summer Reads

This summer has been the first summer (or any season for that matter) where I’ve read more than one book from cover to cover excluding, of course, my kids’ picture books. It’s only a handful of books, but they’ve all been easy reads and perfect for summer and my crazy schedule. And thanks to my local public libary down the street, I have access to a bunch of great books. The other day, I even checked out Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volumes 1 & 2 in preparation for #CookforJulia! The library is awesome! Here’s what I’ve read and what I’m reading…

Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton – An enthralling journey to chefdom by this New York City chef.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua – Don’t believe the negative hype! I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Most Talkative by Andy Cohen – As a BravoTV and Housewives junkie (my guilty pleasure) and a big fan of Andy Cohen, I had to read this. He writes like he talks which can be a little distracting at times, but is very enjoyable nonetheless.

I’m currently reading What Remains by Carole Radziwill – Continuing my fascination with the Bravo Housewives, I had to read this NY Times Bestseller. It’s a little heavier than the other books, but beautifully written.

Not sure what’s next. Any suggestions?

We had lunch at one of our favorite Japanese resta We had lunch at one of our favorite Japanese restaurants today - @ootoyanyc. 🍱 Ordered the special and got to taste a little bit of everything - salmon sushi, soba with uni, grilled butter fish with hijiki salad, homemade tofu with ikura, and tonkatsu. Hello weekend! Upon the request of my dear daughte Hello weekend! Upon the request of my dear daughter, we had kimchi jigae. No tofu in the house so we made do without it and added extra pork belly. 🐷 Kimchi was perfectly ripe and I was able to use leftover galbi tang broth that I had in the freezer. KBBQ for dinner! Ssam with galbi! 🥬This meal is KBBQ for dinner! Ssam with galbi! 🥬This meal is so easy to make and the kids love it. I was pleasantly surprised to discover LA cut galbi at Costco a couple weeks ago! Must’ve been a special because I went back today and nada! Anyway grilled the beef I marinated, made ssamjang, washed the lettuce and BOOM, DINNER! It was also our first meal alfresco this year!
