I made a half-hearted attempt at making baby food for DD when she first started solids. It was easy enough. I made cubes of pureed prunes, pears, apples, yams (this was a big hit), zucchini, and apricots every couple of weeks. BUT it was not as easy as pressing some buttons on a website and having a month supply of baby food appear on my doorstep the next day. Sure, it was certainly not as economical, but it definitely preserved a bit of my sanity. I know, pathetic.
Let me say that baby food has come a long way since Gerber’s and Beech-Nut had the monopoly on this stuff. I started off with homemade food with my older DS, but then found Happy Baby baby food which was okay, but I found myself throwing away half of the food in those $4.99 4-serving boxes. They included two different flavor combos in each box, but one flavor would invariably be completely inedible. I started off with Happy Baby again with DD, but then I happened upon Sprout baby food on Diapers.com*. The options were intriguing – Pasta with Lentil Bolognese, Summer Squash,Yukon Gold Potatoes & Parmesan, Peach Rice Pudding. Yum! I played it safe for my first batch and ordered two 12-pack boxes – one of the Baked Sweet Potato and White Beans and the other of the Roasted Pears and Apricots. It was only after I ordered the stuff that I found out that Tyler Florence is one of the co-founders of Sprout which explained the whole gourmet thing. I must admit that this stuff is delicious. However, I do add a pat of butter and a smidge of salt or brown sugar to the savory varieties to make it a little more palatable. The sweet varieties are pretty tasty. And most importantly, DD loves this stuff!
*Diapers.com is the best baby supply online store, IMHO. I order all things baby from them and they usually have next day shipping. Their customer service is great and super responsive. If you haven’t already, check it out and use my referral code AMKI7798 to receive a discount on your first order.
